Miami Beach Mayor Blames DeSantis for Increasing Covid-19 Cases in Florida

After the state recorded 21,683 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, the greatest single-day number of the ongoing pandemic, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber accused Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The Democratic mayor stated that local officials are doing all possible to circumvent the governor’s irrational wants.

Gelber told CNN, “We’re not allowed to have mask mandates now, we were one of the first cities to require it and we charged a fine just to get people to do it. The governor stopped allowing us to do it and then immediately we saw a surge across our county and state when he did that.”The state has emerged as the virus’s new epicentre, accounting for almost 20% of all new cases in the country. DeSantis, a Republican, has vowed not to impose mask restrictions or more lockdowns as the highly virulent Delta form spreads over most of the United States, frequently criticising public health recommendations as being too broad.

The record Friday Covid-19 case number, issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Saturday, demonstrates how quickly cases can rise, since Florida reported 17,903 new cases just one day earlier. With around 60% of its population over the age of 12 immunised, Florida is in the middle of the pack when it comes to vaccine rates.

Making people safe has been made as difficult as possible by the governor. He’s like the pied piper right now, telling everyone that they don’t have to like the CDC, that they don’t have to wear masks, that they can do anything they want even though we’re in the midst of a massive pandemic. DeSantis signed an executive order on Friday prohibiting school districts from having students to wear masks when they return to class in August.
