Scientists and other health experts are warning that, as the highly transmissible delta Covid form spreads swiftly across the United States and around the world, indoor mask mandates and other public health measures will likely reappear in the United States this fall. As a result, the country is set for a “dangerous” fall season, when delta is predicted to trigger another increase in new coronavirus infections, according to health experts.
The country just celebrated the Fourth of July with some of its first public gatherings in more than a year. Delta, which is already the most common variant in the United States, will wreak havoc on the states with the lowest vaccination rates unless states and businesses reinstate mask rules, capacity limits, and other public health measures that have been primarily rolled back in recent months, according to experts.
Japan has declared a coronavirus emergency in Tokyo, prohibiting spectators from attending the Olympics. High vaccination rates in the United States, combined with the warm summer months, have given the country some breathing room, but outbreaks worldwide are giving Americans a taste of what is to come this fall.Lawrence Gostin, director of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center on National and Global Health Law, said, “I could foresee that in certain parts of the country, there could be a reintroduction of indoor mask mandates, distancing and occupancy limits” in the coming months.”
